Question 1

What is Daitoo?

Accepted Answer

Daitoo is a list app for everything you keep a list of — a morning routine, the grocery shopping, what to pack, the todos for this month. You write a list, fill it with lines, and tick them off as you go. Every item gets an emoji chosen for it automatically, and the app remembers the phrases you have written before so you rarely type the same one twice.

Question 2

What does Daitoo cost?

Accepted Answer

Daitoo is free to use, and paid to configure. Writing lists and filling them, ticking things off, the emoji every item gets, the phrases the app remembers and sharing a list with somebody are all free, and so are your first five lists. Three things need a subscription — Daitoo Pro: what a list is configured to do, reading a photograph onto a list, and keeping more than five lists. There is no advertising, and nothing you have written is ever locked away.

Question 3

Which devices can I use it on?

Accepted Answer

iPhone and Android phones. The two apps are built natively for their own platform, so each behaves the way you expect it to on that platform — but they do exactly the same things.

Question 4

Do I need an account?

Accepted Answer

No. There is no sign-up, no password and no email address to hand over. When the app does need to talk to its backend — to pick an emoji for wording it has not seen, or to sync a shared list — the device itself proves it is a genuine phone, using App Attest on iOS and Play Integrity on Android. There is nothing to log in to, and nothing to log out of.

Question 5

What can I put on a list?

Accepted Answer

Items. An item is one line — the thing it is about — and, if you need it, a note underneath. The note is written in the edit form rather than in the composer, because a second field to tab past would slow down every single item to serve the few that want one.

Question 6

How do I tick something off, edit it, or move it?

Accepted Answer

Tapping is what ticks an item off, and tapping it again puts it back. Completed items sink to the bottom, greyed out and struck through. Everything else is a swipe or a press: Swipe right — edit the item, its note and its wording. Swipe left — delete it. Press and hold — pick it up and drag it somewhere else in the list. In the grid layout the press opens a menu instead, because nothing is being dragged there.

Question 7

Can I change how a list looks?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in the list's settings. A list is drawn either as rows — one item to a line, with its note underneath — or as a grid of cards three across, which suits a shopping list you read at arm's length. The same form carries the switch for the progress bar, which puts a “3 of 7 done” above the items and on the list's card in the overview. Both start the way the app starts: rows, and no bar. Dragging to reorder stays a rows gesture; a card keeps the tap, and edit and delete move under a long press. Both are part of Daitoo Pro.

Question 8

What does “sort automatically” do?

Accepted Answer

It keeps a list in a sensible order instead of the order you typed it in: the shopping in the order of the aisles, a morning routine in the order of a morning. It is off until you turn it on, and the sentence under the switch says what it costs — with sorting on, the list's items are sent to Daitoo's server to be put in order whenever you add one. They are not stored there. You also give up dragging items into an order of your own, because the list is choosing it. Sorting is part of Daitoo Pro.

Question 9

Why are there no due dates, priorities or reminders?

Accepted Answer

Because the lists most people actually keep do not want them. A grocery list, a morning routine and a packing checklist are a handful of lines you tick off, and every app that adds due dates, priorities, assignees and sub-tasks to that has turned a shopping list into a project plan. Daitoo deliberately stops before that line. Reminders that know about time and place are the one thing on that list that might arrive later.

Question 10

Can I complete, reset or empty a whole list at once?

Accepted Answer

Yes — there is a menu next to the list's settings button with exactly three actions: complete all, reset all, and delete all. Completing and resetting are each other's undo, so they happen straight away; emptying asks first, because nothing on screen puts that back. An action with nothing to act on is greyed out rather than hidden, so the menu items never move under your thumb.

Question 11

What happens to items after I tick them off?

Accepted Answer

Whatever that list says. Each list keeps two windows, and both start switched off: one puts completed items back on the list after a while — what makes a morning routine start over each day — and one throws them away after a while, which is how a shopping list clears up after itself. A brand-new list does neither until you ask it to. Both windows are part of Daitoo Pro: changing them is one of the settings the subscription pays for, and a window you have already set keeps firing whether or not the subscription is still running.

Question 12

Why can't a list both reset and delete?

Accepted Answer

Because "whichever deadline comes first" turned out to mean "whichever one you happened to be looking at". The check only runs when a screen opens, so with a 48-hour reset and a 1-day delete, the same item was deleted if you opened the list after 30 hours and reopened if you opened it after 60. The rule now is flat: a list that resets never deletes. The settings form greys the delete window out while reset is on, rather than showing you a setting that does nothing.

Question 13

What does the countdown above the completed items mean?

Accepted Answer

It names the window that will actually fire — "COMPLETED · RESETS IN 19H" or "· CLEARS IN 5D" — and it says nothing at all when both windows are off. It counts in hours while fewer than two days are left and in days above that, because nobody reads "163H" as a week.

Question 14

Who picks the emoji? Can I pick my own?

Accepted Answer

It is picked for you, and no — there is no emoji picker in Daitoo at all. That is the point: nobody is going to open a picker to decorate "buy milk", so something else has to choose, and then a list can be read at a glance without you ever having thought about it. The emoji is the only thing the AI does. It does not correct your spelling and it does not rewrite your wording: what you typed is what the item says, forever.

Question 15

What is sent when an emoji is chosen?

Accepted Answer

Only for wording your device has not written before — a phrase it already knows is answered from its own memory, with no request going out at all. When something is sent, it is the item's one line, the device's language and region, and the name of the list it is going onto, because "mouse" on the groceries is not "mouse" on the desk setup. Your note is never sent. What comes back is one emoji, and what the backend keeps is a fingerprint of the phrase and that emoji — never the text itself, and never the list's name.

Question 16

Why does an item sometimes show a pulsing dot?

Accepted Answer

That is the item waiting for its emoji. There is deliberately no stand-in glyph: a fake answer reads worse than an honest wait. If the request could not go out — no signal, or the backend is having a bad day — the app quietly tries again, backing off from every second to at most once a minute, and the item is perfectly usable in the meantime. Only an item the backend has answered for ever shows a real emoji.

Question 17

What does the camera button next to the composer do?

Accepted Answer

It reads a list off a photograph. It is meant for the two things nobody wants to type twice: a recipe, and a list somebody wrote on paper. The photo is read and the items are written as if you had typed them, named the way a person would write them — "200 g plain flour, sifted" comes back as "Flour" — and the quantities, the weights and the method do not come back at all. They arrive in your language whatever language the photo is in. The picture is in memory for one request and is then gone: nothing is stored, at either end, and a scan that failed is simply one you take again. Reading a photo is part of Daitoo Pro — it is the one call whose cost grows with use, because a model has to look at the picture and no two people photograph the same page. The offer appears when you tap the camera, before anything is sent.

Question 18

How do I share a list with someone?

Accepted Answer

Open the list's settings — the button beside its name, or Edit from the overview — and tap Share. The app mints an invitation link and hands it to the normal share sheet, so you can send it however you usually send things. Once the other person opens it you are both on the same list: you both add, tick off and delete, and each change turns up on the other phone within about ten seconds. Sharing costs nothing and neither of you needs a subscription — not the person who sends the invitation, not the person who opens it.

Question 19

Does the invitation link expire?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on purpose. A link works once and expires after a day, so sharing with two people means tapping Share twice. Once a link has been redeemed it grants nothing, which is what makes a link that later leaks harmless.

Question 20

What happens if I delete a shared list?

Accepted Answer

Deleting a shared list means leaving it — it disappears from your devices and the others keep it. The last member to leave takes the list with them. The card goes the moment you tap Delete, whether or not there was a network to tell the backend about it.

Question 21

What is in Daitoo Pro?

Accepted Answer

Three things cost money, and everything else in the app does not: What a list is configured to do — its layout (rows or a grid of cards), its progress bar, whether it sorts itself, and the two windows that put completed items back or throw them away. Reading a photograph onto a list — the camera next to the composer, which turns a recipe or a handwritten list into items. Keeping more than five lists. Five are free; the sixth is where Daitoo asks.

Question 22

What stays free?

Accepted Answer

Everything you actually do with a list. Writing lists and items, ticking them off, editing, reordering and deleting them, the notes underneath, the emoji chosen for every item, the phrases Daitoo remembers and offers back as you type, completing or emptying a whole list at once, and working with no signal at all. Sharing a list is free too, for both people: an invitation link is the one way Daitoo reaches anybody who does not already have it, and a paywall in front of that would be a paywall in front of a friend. And your first five lists are free — enough for a morning routine, the shopping, work, the kids and a trip.

Question 23

How much does Daitoo Pro cost, and how is it billed?

Accepted Answer

The price is shown in the app, in your own currency, on the screen that offers the subscription — that is the only place it is quoted, because each store sets what a price looks like in each country. Daitoo Pro is a subscription, billed by the App Store or Google Play through the account you already have there. There is no one-off or lifetime purchase at the moment.

Question 24

Is there a free trial?

Accepted Answer

If the current offer includes one, the offer screen says so before you buy, along with what happens when it ends. A trial turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel before it is over — that is the store's rule rather than Daitoo's, and you cancel it the same way you cancel a subscription.

Question 25

How do I subscribe?

Accepted Answer

By reaching for something that needs it. There is no “Go Pro” button anywhere in Daitoo — no row in the settings, no badge on the overview — so the offer turns up when you save a list's settings, tap the camera or add a sixth list, and never otherwise. Nothing is greyed out on the way there either: you can see exactly what you are being asked to pay for. And if you do buy it, the thing you were doing finishes by itself — the settings you were saving are saved.

Question 26

I already subscribed on another device — how do I restore it?

Accepted Answer

Open the offer screen the same way and tap Restore purchases, signed in to the same App Store or Google Play account you bought it with. A subscription belongs to the store account rather than to the phone, so any device signed in to that account can pick it up.

Question 27

Can I move a subscription between iPhone and Android?

Accepted Answer

No. Apple and Google run separate stores and each one bills for itself, so there is no way to move a subscription from one to the other. If you switch phones, cancel in the old store so it stops charging you and subscribe again on the new one. Nothing you have written is affected — only the subscription is tied to the store you bought it from.

Question 28

How do I cancel, and what happens to my lists?

Accepted Answer

Subscriptions are cancelled in the store you bought them from rather than inside Daitoo: on iPhone under Settings → your name → Subscriptions, on Android in Google Play under your profile → Payments and subscriptions. Turn renewal off and Daitoo Pro runs until the end of the period you have paid for. After that nothing is taken away: every list, item and note stays where it is, shared lists go on syncing, a grid stays a grid and a list that resets keeps resetting. What lapses is being able to change those settings, to read a photo onto a list, and to make a new list once you are over five.

Question 29

What actually leaves my device?

Accepted Answer

Sharing a list is the only thing in Daitoo that puts what you wrote on a server. Everything else is deliberately narrower: Emoji — new wording only, and only a fingerprint of it plus the emoji is kept. Automatic sorting, if you switch it on for a list — the items are sent to be put in order and are not stored. Photo scan — the picture is read in a single request and then gone. A list nobody shares never leaves your own devices at all.

Question 30

Do my lists sync between my own devices?

Accepted Answer

On iPhone, yes — through your own private iCloud, which is a different mechanism from sharing and does not involve Daitoo's server. On Android there is no equivalent: lists live on the device unless you share them. Sharing carries one list between people; iCloud carries your own lists between your own devices.

Question 31

How do I delete what Daitoo has of mine?

Accepted Answer

Delete the list, or delete the app. A list that was never shared only ever existed on your devices, so there is nothing else to erase. For a shared list, leaving it removes you from it, and when the last member leaves, the list is gone from the server too. If you would like anything else looked at, write to support@daitoo.app.
